Ribbon wallet

Top post on IndiBlogger, the biggest community of Indian Bloggers         Every little princess loves to copy her mummy. Purses and wallets are the first important accessory that they learn to carry - just like their Mommy! So let's make this beautiful piece creatively.

Things required -
1. Ribbon - approx 2mtrs, different colours
2. Buckram - one piece (a coarse cotton fabric stiffened with glue used to stiffen clothing)
3. Fabric glue
4. A pair of scissors
5. Few Embellishments
6. Needle and Thread (optional, if you are planning to use glue throughout or sewing machine)
7. Measuring tape

I am going to make a 10" X 5" wallet. So measure and cut the buckram of the same size.
We need to cut the ribbon in strips. The ribbons here are 1inch broad. I have cut the orange one for horizontal length and purple one for vertical length, like this.
Cut more strips accordingly. Cut the strips a little longer than the actual length. We need enough strips to cover the entire piece of buckram.
Now, apply some fabric glue on the edge of the buckram and stick the ribbon strip like this,
Make sure you stick only the edge
First, stick all the orange ribbons lengthwise,
Flip over and stick the edges so that the ribbons stay in place.
Let's take the purple ribbon strip and paste it under the first orange strip.
Now place the orange ribbon strip on top of the purple and the next one below it, to form a weave.
Apply some fabric glue on the other end of the buckram and secure the purple strip. Now take another strip, but this time paste it on top of the orange strip as shown in the pic.
Follow the same steps of binding, only this time putting the purple ribbon alternately under the orange one
You can see the look it gets after gluing the ribbon strip edge
Stick the rest of the strips like this to cover the base fabric
Secure the ends of the ribbon strips on all sides so that they don't come off. You can use the fabric glue or needle and thread to do so. I used my sewing machine as it's a little faster than the other methods.
Now we have a piece of fabric which looks like this -
Measure 1/3rd of the fabric and fold it so that reverse side is up. Then stitch the sides, as shown.
Reverse it when you are finished stitching. Add some embellishments and the wallet is ready to be used! Also you can attach a press button or a piece of velcro strap for fastening.
Play with the ribbons and make some colourful personal pouches for your lovely little lady!
(It can be easily converted into a sling bag by sewing a piece of ribbon on the sides.)
